This is Kat! Another one of the Healthy Horizons Family Farm branches!
My sister Elizabeth has been the prime holder of the blogging and "marketing" of Healthy Horizons. I finally am having the kind of energy needed early enough in the year to ACTUALLY get some stuff going!
Mostly my specialty has been more on the husbandry side of the house, and mostly with the poultry. But now we have expanded to having a bunny, chickens, ducks, dogs, and a parakeet.
Amongst also wanting to be able to provide organic and healthy food options for my animals, I'm also wanting to provide healthier food options for my children and family too. I remember a few years ago when Elizabeth had the garden at my mom's house, there was one sunny day in the summer when my daughter, who was 2 at the time, went out to the garden, picked up a watermelon (the size of her head), called to me and said "mommy can I have watermelon!". The pure beauty of that summer, and the fact that there were multiple times that we had to yell at the kids to "get out of the garden", and "stop eating all of the kale!" Makes me so happy. I want my children to grow up with the ability to walk out into the backyard, pick some lunch, and play in the woods. In order to do that, there's lots of prep work, teaching, and work, that needs to go into it. I'm hoping to keep up with this blog for our journey together this year, and the progression of our garden!
I'm told that this format works better for recipes so here goes! Here is another delicious way to use up seasonal apples!

I'm not sure the history of the name but I assume is has to do with using a Dutch oven though you can use any kind of oven safe pan. I've made some modifications since my childhood for my own personal tastes so I will note them but also give you the original.

6 large apples (or 7-8 Chehalis apples) cored and thinly sliced
6 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon
(I also like a dash of cloves)
1/4 cup sugar or equivalent (I prefer brown sugar)
1 cup flour
4 eggs (if they are my eggs which are slightly smaller then I use 5)
1 cup milk.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Farenheit. Saute the apples in the oven safe pan along with the butter and cinnamon. (I also prefer to put half the sugar in the pan and saute in order to get a bit of caramelization.) Saute until soft. Pour batter mixture over the apples and place the whole pan in the oven for 25 minutes or until set.

Voila! I like to make a double batch so we can have leftovers because it's just as good cold as it is hot!
Sound familiar? I keep thinking one of these days I will learn to stop scheduling new stuff for myself in the Spring. It just keeps happening that once the fruit and veggies are safely stored away in jars or freezer and I've had a few weeks of breathing room that I want to start over already! But we still have the dreary winter to go through. So this winter I was feeling antsy enough that I signed up to be in a community production of Beauty and the Beast. Now that it's time to make new products, build and plant an entirely new garden, raise goats by hand (unfortunately), I also have every Saturday and Tuesday scheduled with rehearsal and set building! Any wonder why we haven't completed fencing in the back portion of our property?!

So, to sum up:
We moved into our new place in Maple Valley last July.
We thoroughly enjoyed our double wood stoves upstairs over the winter which required many hours of chopping wood. Hours which I was happy to provide considering I'm trying to loose some of the leftover baby reminders on my hips/tummy/thighs/etc!

I learned more about different kinds of nut and seed oils and have updated my recipes accordingly.
I finally decided to do it. I'm taking the plunge into actually selling my home-made skin care products. As mentioned in an earlier post, I've been making my magical bug bite and burn salve for a couple of years with amazing results and the only ingredients are infused olive oil and beeswax! Taking what I've learned about infused oils to the next level is pretty intimidating but I've never been one to take on "small" challenges.

Due to how much camping and hiking we do, all natural (and safe!) bug spray was my next priority. I found many recipes online that claimed to do the job but that was hard for me to believe considering they were mostly water. The two recipes that seemed to have the greatest compliments for efficacy were either entirely made of apple cider vinegar (ACV) which was effective but stinky or with a high concentration of essential oils which may not be safe for kids or pregnancy and may also burn sensitive skin, all categories with directly apply to my family right now.

So I combined the two recipes, took another ingredient from another recipe and combined them, and infused it all with eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, basil, and lavender. What came out actually smelled really good once the vinegar evaporated. I have tested it here int he PNW with good results and I have a friend in Texas testing it on herself and her family.
General body lotion and mature skin cream are currently in testing and should be available soon. There is still some tweaking I want to do with both of those and today I'm taking on the challenge of refining the lotion recipe which, so far, has ended up too thick.

Bug bite and burn salve is brewing for another two weeks, infusion for extra dry skin cream is brewing another week, and brew for face toner will be another week. Probably the most difficult part of starting all this is I'm trying to predict the demand for products that I haven't introduced yet and take several weeks to prepare.

This week I received the professional logo I requested, set up a domain name, and began setting up my e-commerce presence thanks to TicTail.com. It was difficult deciding which platform to use to sell my products since skin care products tend to be small and with low price points. Etsy requires a listing fee and a percentage fee of each sale and you get hit a second time with PayPal surcharges. I found a great article by Grace Dobush, long time Etsy seller, which addressed all my concerns about e-commerce sites in general including a chart outlining the various platforms available for selling products online, what they offer, and how much their service charges cost for a variety of price points.

Later this week I expect the website healthyhorizonsherbals.com to go live with all the products currently available. Already you can e-mail healthyhorizonsherbals@gmail.com and expect a prompt response from me. Also on the "to-do" list are business cards, unique vintage labels, twitter account, and a facebook page. Until then, I will keep my Products page up to date with what is available. Shipping within the USA is available for $6.Linguisticnursehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02034864622410548219noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1839655112058077081.post-3449106949191479072016-05-15T21:21:00.000-07:002016-05-16T22:27:00.593-07:00New herbal products!

Over the past several years I have been slowly learning about the edible and medicinal properties of many plants, especially those native to the Pacific Northwest. Though it's considered an invasive species from the Old World (the Indians called it "white man's foot") my gateway drug was Plantain. Not the banana, but a green herb that comes in about two hundred varieties spread over the entire earth, the most common of which in our area are "broad leaf" or plantago major and "narrow leaf" or plantago lanceolata. Being so widely spread, of course the two noted above have many more than one or two names, but for the sake of my reference and brevity I'm sticking with "broad" and "narrow."

Plantago has been used for millennia for a combination of topical and internal ailments and is an excellent edible green as it is extremely high in vitamins and minerals. One species is cultivated specifically for psyllium and they all produce very small seeds that can be powdered into flour. My favorite use is putting it directly on bug bites. You have to bruise it first to release the oils by rubbing it in your hands or mashing it up in your teeth. It has antimicrobial, astringent, anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory properties. We most often use it for soothing nettle stings, general bug bites, rashes, scrapes, and burns. I've developed the habit of picking some on the side of a trail and keeping a few leaves in my pocket whenever hiking just in case. My personal experience leads me to believe that the broad leaf variety is more effective for skin and topical issues and the narrow leaf variety is more effective internally. Of course, if you can't find one, the other will do just fine!

On to products!

I've made salve for the last couple of years using primarily broad leaf plantain and a couple other skin beneficial herbs like yarrow, comfrey, and dandelion soaked in extra virgin olive oil for a few weeks. Add some beeswax for structure and you have portable, spreadable, skin-healing magic! My family swears by it and we use it for just about any closed skin issue like bruises, boils, bites, burns, and stings. I always take a few ounces with us on camping trips.

**FYI oil and beeswax products are discouraged for open wounds as they tend to seal in bacteria**

Given my sensitive skin, Shoshana's even more sensitive skin, and our concerns about applying toxins to the largest organ in our bodies I've been interested in broadening my homemade skin care products so I can feel confident using things like moisturizer, lotion, scrubs, and soaps. The most accessible of which were sunscreen and lip balm! Quick online search will bring up several simple recipes for both. I picked my favorites and tweaked some of the ratios for my personal preference and added vanilla as a basic scent. The difference is my use of herb-infused oils when the recipe calls for liquid oil. At this point I have my skin salve combo, rosemary, lavender, rose, eucalyptus, calendula, echinacea, oregano, and peppermint infused oils, and dandelion root tincture (made with alcohol instead of oil) available for tinkering.

It's been a long time. And a difficult year. I'm sorry to miss a lovely summer and harvest season but I was having difficulty recovering from the birth of my youngest, Judah Daniel. If you want to read more about it look here.

February
in the Pacific Northwest is typically cold, dreary, with lots of
precipitation, sometimes in the form of snow. So what could possibly
be a garden chore for this month? In my experience, proper planning
for your garden takes just as much time as doing the initial
planting. And with proper planning your garden will be more efficient
and satisfying.

Step
one for planning crops is knowing your garden space. What is your
zone? What is your microclimate? Do you have clay, boggy, flood plain
soil? Where is your best sun exposure? What about slopes, drainage,
existing trees, bushes, or man-made structures that effect wind, heat
uptake, and water drainage?

(pic: freshly harvested crabapples,)

Tip:
You can even create sub-microclimates with the crops within your
garden by planting for density and height in a wide horseshoe shape.
The area within the horseshoe will be a significantly warmer climate
than within rows. Some of my favorite garden planning resources are
"Gaia's Garden," "Week-By-Week Vegetable Gardener's Handbook," and "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible." more of a landscaping emphasis check out "The Garden Planner."

Of
course, the majority of winterizing your beds and garden space should
already be done but maintenance is important. Some areas of my garden
need deeper mulch so I need to finish that before the end of the
month so the mulch has time to donate extra nutrients before the
sprouts really need them.

Once
you have a basic garden plan it is a good idea to start comparing
seeds and deciding which varieties you want to grow. There are a few
local options for free seed trading such as the Olympia Seed
Exchange, Harvest Pierce County (extension of Pierce Conservation
District), and the King County Seed Lending Library besides swapping or
sharing with your neighbor or at an organized seed-swap. These stock
varieties that have been locally grown and donated by other growers,
not regulated companies who make a living selling seed, so be aware
they may have been improperly crossed or harvested poorly. The next seed swap is this weekend, hosted by Sustainable West Seattle. Check it out!

There
has been some legislation discussed in other states that would force
most seed libraries to close in attempts to protect the integrity of
seeds. This is not expected to be an issue in Washington State in the
near future but if you want more information there is a good article here.

A
few seed companies operate within the PNW and specialize in varieties
that thrive in our cool, maritime climate. My favorites are:

Adaptive Seeds

Just kidding!Last Saturday, March 29th, despite the complete lack of physical changes normally seen in the last two months of gestation in goats, we were pleasantly shocked to discover two beautiful kids in the stable! I had even begun telling regular milk customers that we may not have any milk products this year. The babies had already drunk the preliminary colostrum before we arrived and were resting peacefully. Chestnut seemed in good health, the placenta was completely passed, and she wasn't particularly interested in any extra electrolytes.
Later that day Tim called while the girls and I were at my mom's house and said the baby goats didn't look right. I drove the seven blocks home right away was concerned enough to immediately search the internet. My heart dropped to discover they were experiencing the neurological side effects of a vitamin deficiency. Something we had never experienced before but is not that uncommon in goat babies. It was already "after hours" but I called the vet right away to get our hands on the right vitamins.

We brought them inside and began bottle feeding them right away some of their mama's milk because they were quickly loosing the ability to suckle.

Three hours later, at 10pm, Tim arrived with the appropriate injectable B vitamin complex and general booster straight from the hands of the vet in Maple Valley. The kids were already pretty cold at that point which made me extremely nervous. We added hand and foot warmers from our hiking stash both underneath and above the kids in an attempt to keep their temperatures up. Unfortunately, exactly one hour later the girl quietly slipped away. These have definitely been a rough last two years for the goat herd. Many tears were shed. Since Tim had a really bad cold and I regularly take medication to treat insomnia mom volunteered to stay overnight to nurse the little thing back to health. The original plan was to set an alarm for every three hours with mom and Tim taking turns to feed him overnight. Between the hours of midnight and 2am mom heroically did everything in her power to keep his temperature up and keep him fed constantly. Come to find out a few days later she even had to restart his breathing a couple of times because he was about to give up. (Cue more tears.)

For the next two days we fed him nearly every hour during the day and every three hours at night. He got a general booster shot and a total of four doses of B vitamin injections. The picture above was, I believe, one of his short trips outside to bond with mama before being brought back inside for the next round of feedings. Both baby and mama were quite happy to be back together, even for just a short time.

Back outside with mama Chestnut and uncle Hazlenut.

Once he stabilized enough to be outside with his family we still bottle fed him a few more times until he was drinking like a champ from Chestnut. The most happy moment for me was during his second introduction to uncle Hazelnut he quickly assumed the playful headbutting posture and pranced around a bit, falling down a couple of times too. Hazelnut was interested in playing too but just held his head still waiting for the baby to instigate the physical contact. Adorable! That day Tim came up with an appropriate name for him from a fantasy trilogy he had recently read: Kelsier, also known as the "survivor of Hathsin." I had been thinking along the lines of "survivor" but hadn't come up with any viable options yet. Kelsier it is!

So, our herd has grown by one, a boy. We are already inundated with milk since we need to regularly milk one side of her udder to balance out the single kid. Tim already tried making some soft cheese but either the chemistry of new milk wasn't right or the bacterium didn't take so instead we have sour cream. Please let us know if you would like to be part of the regular milk pick up schedule. Also, please let us know ahead of time if you would like some chevre since we need about a gallon and the process takes about a day.
My first chore post published before the month actually starts! This means that you have no excuse for failing to complete ALL THE TASKS in a timely fashion! Or, you could just read and enjoy the hard work that other people put into their crops and appreciate your local farmer all the more.

General Chores
Do not forget to harden off your sprouts before planting them outside. Most nurseries take that into consideration and only sell sprouts that are already acclimated to the outdoors but it never hurts to ask.

Begin fertilizing indoor plants. Transplant root bound house plants to a larger pot. Harden them off slowly if you intend them to live outdoors for the summer.

Vegetable Garden
According to zone 8 our last frost date was around March 15th so now is when things really get hectic in a vegetable garden. Keep in mind that though our temperatures are, on average, above freezing, areas in the Pacific Northwest are actually more dictated by moisture than temperature. Can you imagine what would happen to juvenile tomatoes, peppers, and squash if they were put outside right now? They would simply rot with all our average rainfall and humidity. Besides, the rains bring out the slugs and I'm not one to put poison out in the open what with toddlers and multiple animals traipsing around. If you don't have ducks around to keep down the slug population we've found beer sunk down in the soil in tuna dishes or some other similar-sized dish works wonders over night. Just be sure to dump the beer and bodies in the morning. Otherwise creatures like my sister's dog might take advantage.

With that in mind now is the time start transplanting hardy sprouts like broccoli, cabbage, leafy greens. You can also direct sow those and moderately hardy seeds like beets, dill, carrots, chard, kale, lettuce, parsley, radish, turnip, and rutabaga.

Pick asparagus regularly to encourage it to continue producing. As production dies down allow some of the small shoots to mature into seed heads so the plant is encouraged to keep spreading.

Garlic that has overwintered should have some healthy leaves by now. Usually this is the time for the second feeding of a general bulb fertilizer. I usually rely on home made compost but I've only been growing garlic for a few years so maybe the combinations of guano, blood meal, bone meal, and phosphorus are worthwhile but I haven't tried them yet.

The first week of April is really the last call to plant warm weather plants indoors such as basil, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, squash, and seed potatoes. Otherwise you will run into the cool, wet weather in fall with an immature plant and no produce to speak of. Also, avoid planting bareroot plants like fruit trees and berry bushes now. They need to come from a pot to have a chance to produce this year or to set a healthy root system before winter.

Mid to late month you can start transplanting and sowing pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers. I have yet to have success direct sowing either pumpkins or winter squash because either the spring weather rots the plants and brings out too many pests or they go in the ground too late and never mature. Being able to grow winter squash and pumpkins from seed is one of the things that is most exciting to me about the greenhouse. Now I don't have to buy those sprouts and I get to be involved in the whole process!

Late in the month we can safely begin planting beans and corn. Theoretically, you can start them indoors or in a greenhouse and transplant at that time but beware that beans and corn generally dislike transplanting so you must expect to loose some of them to shock.

Flowers and Herbs
The first week of April is last call for planting summer flowering bulbs. I remember the timing (usually) because ideal planting time is around my mom's birthday. How convenient that she also likes bulbs! If you like to feed your bulbs, now is the time.

Perennials and flowering shrubs can go in now.

Most herbs can be transplanted or sown outdoors around mid month except for the especially fragile ones like basil and marjoram.

Aknowledgements:

This month by month compilation was started simply for my own reference. But I was putting so much effort into it that I thought it only fair to share. The above and previous lists are from a combination of my experience and these reference materials:
The majority of my information recently has come from a lovely book called "Gaia's Garden: A guide to home scale permaculture. 2nd Edition." as well as tips and tricks from two lovely ladies at Sustainable Renton certified in Permaculture Design. In fact, a tips and tricks lecture was offered last Sunday at the main office but, sadly, I could not make it. However, there is another permaculture-focused class coming up on April 6th at 4pm at the Community Farm. One hour of instruction then everyone working together to implement those plans for the SR P-patch. Should be fun! I hope I can attend the first hour, but no promises! Also, I do plan to attend the Seed and Seedling Swap at the main office on April 12th at 12:30pm. You can find these activities and more at the Events page of the website or on the Sustainable Renton Facebook page.

Since I'm learning so much and it is all so exciting I thought I would share with all of you! So I've summarized the Permaculture Principles from "Gaia's Garden," pages 6-7:
1. Observe your site over multiple seasons and plan accordingly.
2. Connect the various elements of the design to work as an entire ecosystem.
3. Go with the flow. Work with the cycles of the seasons, slopes, microclimates, etc for maximum yield with minimum input.
4. Design elements to perform multiple functions.
5. Design multiple ways to perform the same important function in case one system fails.
6. Learn the "leverage points" of your system so if something needs tweaking you can achieve your goals with little input.
7. Use small-scale, intensive systems. Work out a small design and expand as you learn. (In the medical field we would say start low, go slow.)
8. Optimize the edge; the joining of two environments is the most diverse part of a system.
9. Work toward a mature ecosystem rather than every year slashing the natural progression back to newborn stage.
10. Use biological and renewable resources.

What I would like to do for future posts is devote an entire post to one principle. That would motivate me to learn even more and would drive a bite sized format for interested readers to digest. I feel comfortable with principles 1-4 but after that i can only claim overview knowledge and I'm still not sure what is meant by the "edge" of different designs working together. But I'm looking forward to learning it!

We are actively implementing Principle number 10 at Healthy Horizons: rain barrels bought off Craigslist, spigot from Lowe's, installed by dad and Tim. Total cost: $29 per barrel! They're not even set up yet because the house is only partially outfitted with gutters right now but we have collected enough rainwater so far in strategically placed buckets and wheelbarrows around the property that I have not needed to use the faucet at all yet! I'm hopeful that rain harvesting combined with covering the soil with wood chips will significantly cut our water usage and the related bill.

Setting up the fencing to keep the ducks contained for a month or so until my little plants can develop good root systems otherwise the ducks will uproot everything in search of grubs.
Buy the gutters needed or rain collection and set up rain barrels.

Continue planting flowers, veggies, and herbs around the base of fruit trees.

Transplant pumpkins to larger pots as they outgrow the baby trays.

Build a raised bed along the west side in the greenhouse for future tomatoes, peppers, and herbs.

Our journey with food continues to evolve along with Shoshana's recovery. When cancer cells were running rampant throughout her bone marrow and blood stream we did everything in our non-medical power to help her body heal itself, avoiding foods and toxins that would only make recovery more difficult. I even refused to allow her to be fed Pedialyte during recovery from a bout of diarrhea because I didn't trust the brand. Instead, we fed her a dilute orange juice concoction thanks to the dietitian on her case. For the year that she had a feeding tube we made her a homemade "formula" with whole, organic foods rather than using the whey protein and sugar (2nd ingredient!) formula provided by the hospital which caused her heart rate to slowly but steadily increase to the point which the physical therapist did not feel comfortable playing games with her and also cause severe, caustic diarrhea.

Throughout these last 18 months we have done the best we could with the resources we had. Now that things are a little calmer we have more time to contemplate our long-term lifestyle plan. One of the things that has been tumbling through my mind is "why us?" and "why her?" Many of my family members have already had experience with some form of cancer. I, myself, also dealt with a case of "pre-cancerous cells" in my thyroid which threw my body chemistry off so badly I nearly had to drop out of nursing school. For that reason, we had already implemented many of the major "anti-cancer" lifestyle changes such as removing all toxic cleaners and self care products from our home, eating a wide variety of organic vegetables, and growing as much of our own produce as possible. To have our first family case of childhood cancer is frustrating on so many levels, especially since we already have a relatively "clean" lifestyle.

Which gets me thinking: how much more can and should we do from here on out? It would be lovely to have an easy answer of "if only this then that" but life is not that straightforward. Apparently, leukemia is one of the few cancers that has virtually no links with diet. Other than pockets of incidence around nuclear disasters and heavy metals in the soil, it touches every continent, every people group, every culture, every neighborhood virtually equally. Even the Amish people have nearly the exact same amount of risk as the general U.S. population. (CITATION)

Recently I came across an article called "Food Is Not Your God" which summed up my thoughts on the whole foods movement very well. "I’ve sensed something very disturbing in the Whole Foods World…it’s
something that has bothered me to my very core and I’m speaking out
against it. FOOD IS NOT OUR SAVIOR."

How easy it would be to say that if we only consume these things in this proportion, we will live long, healthy lives. But the world doesn't work that way. According to the Bible, "Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay (Rom. 8:20-21, NLT)." Working so diligently to learn about the links between diet and cancer began to focus my thoughts away from God to me. "If it were true that eating whole foods would keep you healthy and free from tragedy, then a drug addict would never carry a baby to full term…and a one-Coke-per day elderly man wouldn’t live until the ripe old age of 95. Food cannot save you – Jesus can save you (Food Is Not Your God)."

The conflicting information in the whole food movement is what first started to get my attention. Grains are bad, grains are good, butter is bad, butter is okay as long as you know the cows it came from, all red meat is bad, take two tablespoons asparagus puree morning and night, etc. etc. ad nauseum. We even came across a website that preached raw goats milk as both a preventative a cancer cure. Never mind that Shoshana grew up on goats milk from our backyard!
There are a few principles that we will continue to live by such as avoiding known toxins, eating organically when possible, making the majority of our food at home, and balancing meat and vegetable protein sources.
If you live in Renton or nearby your garden area will likely be rated as either 8a or 8b by the USDA zoning guide. Keep in mind that these chores are for that zone and some of them are specific to a maritime climate. Always keep your garden soil in mind before tramping all around. If you have an especially boggy garden area maybe you should wait a few extra weeks before compacting everything with your activities.

Keep the phrase WHENEVER THE SOIL CAN BE WORKED in mind. Given that simple activities don't muddify your garden, a serious concern considering how much rain we've already gotten this month, now is the time to prep your beds for planting. If you are not using a heavy mulch that contributes nutrients to your soil make sure to AMEND YOUR BEDS with a good compost. If the soil is too sandy consider also adding vermiculite for water retention. If your bed is sticky and dense consider peat for loft and oxygen penetration. Yet another plug for heavy mulching: with heavy mulching you should have minimal to no weeding to do from over winter. You also will not need to amend your soil. My favorite benefit is that eliminates the need to till and mix up the naturally occurring layers in the soil!

Again, if not using heavy mulch, use CARDBOARD or NEWSPAPER to protect the prepped beds from weeds until they actually have seeds/plants in them.

Hopefully you have already REMOVED THE EXTRA MULCHING from around your garlic sprouts. If the bulbs are too deep because you protected them from freezing temps with mulch then they will be very susceptible to rot. In another month or two, don't forget to keep an eye out for the flower scapes that form from the center stalk. Trim them out as close to the leaves as possible without damaging the leaves once it starts to bend or curl. I haven't made anything special from my scapes yet other than sauteeing them up with other veggies but there are tons of interesting recipes online that I'm excited to try this year.

Mid month begin planting COLD HARDY SEEDS outside. These include most leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, beets, onion sets, parsnips, peas, kohlrabi, radishes, and spinach. The last week of the month will be time for transplanting similar sprouts from indoors or your favorite nursery.

TRANSPLANTING: Don't forget to HARDEN OFF your sprouts from indoors before planting them in the ground. Otherwise they will be shocked with the sudden change in conditions and will either be stunted or die. :(

FEED SPRING BULBS with an appropriate organic fertilizer once the greens pop through. Typically this falls under Early March but we also had some early warm weather that set the bulbs into motion in February. If you haven't already fed your bulbs it's not too late.

BLUEBERRIES love a dose of acidic compost/coffee grounds/ground bark/fertilizer this time of the year.

RASPBERRIES should be trimmed to remove canes that produced fruit the previous year as well as canes that are smaller than a pencil to allow the healthiest plants plenty of room.

I know this chore list is late. Hopefully it will be better timed next month! Happy gardening!
Despite a rather late week of sub-freezing temps it is starting look like Spring around here! Bulbs are sprouting, fruit trees are budding, and flocks of birds are making their way North again. The sun is even predicted to shine for a few days in a row!

I'm quite excited for my new garlic sampler and saffron crocus bulbs which are poking through the soil. I'm also pleasantly surprised at how the wood chips eventually turn into the most perfect potting soil you can ever want! Now a significant yearly expense is eliminated! Once the wood chips are three years old they decompose into light, moist, black soil which seems be ideal for seedlings. Just sweep aside the top layer of dry chips and second layer moist, in progress chips and dig out however much potting soil you want, given you should leave enough material for the mature crops you plan to grow there later. Since the first layer of chips I laid down started around eight inches thick I have than enough medium for my sprouts and mature plants.
Besides my family's needs I'm anticipating giving extra sprouts to fellow gardeners at the first Sustainable Renton Sprout/Seedling Exchange as well as supplementing a special event dinner at the Red House in May to highlight sustainable projects in Renton.

Thanks to a single grow light set up in the garage I've started a few trays of sprouts to get a jump on cool weather crops. I already have many different species sprouting like tomatoes, celery, peppers, leafy greens, peas, three kinds of broccoli, two kinds of cabbage, and two kinds of onions. Recently I planted more chard, lettuce, and got a start on beets. Then, on a different day herbs, additional peppers, cucumbers and carrots. The following week I got some help from a friend to transplant the tomato sprouts into medium pots.

I saved only a few types of seeds since some of those I was trying to "dry" outside got moldy from the ambient humidity.

Since then we have had a lot of adventures and a few more hard situations. In October we spent our first vacation more than an hour away from the hospital all the way in LA. We got some quality time with family and a few friends. Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and the beach in LA with Tim's parents and a friend I met in the Northwest. Shoshana still talks about the "Berry Farm" and how she's going go those rides again. Then we spent a few days in San Diego with one of Tim's groomsmen and his very pregnant wife. The girls adored Sea World!

Late in the trip we made a public announcement:

And in December found out it was a boy! Hello, dear Judah!

Also in December we went to a Christmas Lights event at Warm Beach and played some late games with family and friends. Then for New Year's Eve we went a little farther north to celebrate with those same friends at their house. And they had a big swing. Shoshana loved it, of course.

This pregnancy has been pretty rough already so my activities with the garden may be a little scaled back this spring. But don't worry, it's all for a good cause! Also, we are looking to sell our house/property to a developer. We are looking for a place that is either dirt cheap so we can build our own place or affordable but permanent residence sort of a thing. Three bedrooms, nice kitchen, play room, and property enough for my animals and garden are a must.
Nearly every day that I'm not working I'm doing some sort of preserving or crop processing. Recent events:
Canning tomatoes, tomato sauce, pears, peaches, green beans.
Seed saving quinoa, peas, beans, dill, mustard greens.
Unfortunately, all this doesn't leave much time for blogging but, rest assured, we are very busy around here.

Upcoming tasks: transplant winter crop sprouts, plant winter peas, finish greenhouse, seed goat pasture, cover creeping grass in orchard.

Phew! Time for bed. Enjoy the pictures!

He is planning to make a "rocket furnace" to heat the greenhouse and run the hot exhaust through a floor of gravel and cement chunks. I'm pretty excited! I'm also very pleased with the crabapple tree. It is doing so well and the apples are almost ready! Do you have a favorite crabapple recipe?

Today I harvested a single head of quinoa. I'm amazed how much is in each head! But I will definitely need to work on the efficiency of separating the seeds from the flowers since they don't pop out like many other seeds. Mom and I worked most of the day to prep and can two boxes of fresh green beans from Carpinito Brothers. Next up: peaches and tomatoes.

She now has a gauze dressing over the hole and it is expected to simply close on its own. If not, a simple procedure will help it close. We have to stay one more night in the hospital to make sure that she will breathe easily while asleep but then we go home! Already, we have walked to the playroom without bringing 20 lbs of equipment with us, there is no extra breathing hole that we need to suction and two other machines at home are now obsolete. Besides, she has been eating a lot more just in the last few weeks. I wonder if capping the trach had something to do with that? Maybe having that tube in made it uncomfortable for her to swallow? In any case, she is doing wonderfully and I expect we'll be home without any issues tomorrow.

In discussion about Shoshana's care plan the hospitalist mentioned that her sister in India was recently diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. Our efforts with Shoshana opened a long conversation with her about diet and cancer and I had the opportunity to share about the Sustainable Renton gardening session at the Community Farm this weekend as well as the resources I've found most helpful. Though it still hurts to relive some of the most stressful times of my life it is a beautiful thing that my experience can help make someone else's experience easier. And I may get to see her again!Linguisticnursehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02034864622410548219noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1839655112058077081.post-36997720961542950952013-09-01T18:17:00.003-07:002013-09-01T18:24:19.286-07:00Fall GardenI can't believe it's already been a month since my last post! Almost every day that I'm not working I am spending time either in the garden or preserving produce. One of the new things I'm adding to the tasks this year is harvesting seeds so that I don't have to keep buying them. Yesterday I did my first threshing and winnowing of pea seeds. Unfortunately, many of them had cracked seed sacks which makes them unable to germinate.

We have transplanted the last of the fall sprouts: broccoli, cabbage, fennel, carrots, beets, peas, lettuce, kale, and overwintering onions. I have yet to plant the garlic sampler I got from Nichols Garden Nursery to help me decide which kinds to cultivate; I am especially excited about that experiment!

Once the weather turns sour enough that grass stops growing we will add another layer of newspaper and wood chips to the area in the orchard that wasn't done quite properly and is now overtaken by grass. We have found that in the areas covered properly weeds are almost non-existent! Only one certain kind of grass manages to grow from underneath and it is exceptionally easier to pull out from wood chips than dirt. Also, any weeds that float in are shockingly easy to pull. I've pulled more giant dandilion roots this season than in all of my gardening seasons before. One of these days I'll actually videotape how easy these wood chips are to manage. Some areas I haven't touched once since laying them down and they are still weed free!

If you are interested in seeing how the wood chips are laid down Sustainable Renton is hosting a Back to Eden Gardening clinic hosted by me! This Saturday, Sept 7th, 1-4pm. Meet us at the Community Farm location in the Highlands:
Other events coming up I am really excited about are the seed saving lesson on Sept 13th at 6pm and the Harvest Mayhem party Sunday, Sept 15th from 4-7pm at the same location. Will I see any of you there?

The last weekend in July we walked in the Renton River Days Parade with Sustainable Renton. We had a grand time passing out hundreds of packets of seeds. Earlier we had hoped to staff a booth for the weekend but we simply didn't have enough people to staff the entire weekend. We sure hope to have our first booth next year!
I also helped coordinate a group of high school age Japanese exchange students (and two American students) in building three garden beds for Apollo Elementary just behind the Community Farm land thanks to my friend Michelle who works for States 4H International Exchange Program. You can see a post by the Sustainable Renton president, Chris, here. Special thanks to Jim Doty who was also there the whole time and volunteered the use of his truck and several pieces of vital equipment. We built "lasagna" beds which consists of alternating layers of compost, grass clippings or straw on cardboard. Since we didn't have straw we topped the beds with wood chips. This required a heck of a lot of wheelbarrow-hauling. The poor kids were massaging their forearms and sweating up a storm by the end despite the cool weather and even periodic rain. We are ever so grateful! Can you imagine five of us at a time loading wheelbarrows and pushing them over a couple of acres at least 50 times per bed? It would take us years!

Besides the work party that day was pretty darn hectic for me. I had to get up super early, pick up greenhouse equipment from the King Conservation District warehouse in Maple Valley, drop the equipment off at my house for storage, head to the farm to harvest things for the Red House in Renton, deliver said produce, return to the farm to prep for the students, coordinate the students, then head over to my sister's house for her surprise birthday party! Phew! But also very exciting!
Since my last post a lot of things have happened with the goats. Chestnut and her remaining kid, Latte, are looking fantastic. Rosemary's kids are generally better though they continue to struggle with abdominal pain after the damaging effects of the infection. Rosemary, however, never did recover. In total we have lost half of the herd. Rosemary had such an advanced case, we were very close to putting her down one day, that her gut was too damaged to recover. She looked and felt better for a few days but continued to have runny poop to lose weight. Finally, despite constant treatment including hand feeding, probiotics, electrolytes, and herbal supplements she simply couldn't continue. My mom saved me the trauma of putting her down and Tim buried her. Tim wrote about it. She was very dear to me.

Next on the to-do list:
- Transplant fall crop seedlings.
- Harvest heirloom apples on my lot and make applesauce.

Also, please pray for my colleagues at work. We have six nurses on our Wound Care team covering Tacoma General, Allenmore Hospital, and an unofficial outpatient service. However, two of our colleagues are having family and health troubles which explains much of the delay since my last post. For the near future I will be working much more than usual trying to cover as much as possible for them so please understand that I won't be able to make updates as frequently as before.Linguisticnursehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02034864622410548219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1839655112058077081.post-53093735129917551332013-08-01T22:57:00.001-07:002013-08-01T23:09:08.272-07:00Rosemary's Death

For the first time we lost a kid to illness. One week ago three of the six kids, one from Rosemary named Alpha and two from Chestnut named Mocha and Americano, developed some severe diarrhea. The sort of thing we have seen before when a goat eats a little of a bad thing or too much of a good thing which imbalances their digestive system. We did what we could at the acute phase then waited it out overnight. They were much better the next day and more improved the following day. They were even nursing from the moms again.

Then yesterday Tim noticed (remembering in hindsight) that the moms had more milk than usual. Some variation is normal and it wasn't enough at the time to trigger any special warnings.

This morning when I peeked my head out there to give them vegetable scraps I could tell something was wrong. The two older ones were sluggish and the youngest didn't even stand up to come over. Alpha was dehydrated and surprisingly skinny. If you think you can handle animals on an average day don't forget to take into consideration the very sick days. Water, bottle feeding, and warm mash for three hours was too little too late. As I carried him out of sight of the herd with my .22 ready he breathed his last in my arms. I was even too late to pull the trigger.

We have lost two adult goats to accidental poisoning but to lose a little one to illness feels very different. Things have been crazy around here including spending a lot of time in the garden several blocks away and I just didn't go see the goats regularly. There are standard tasks twice a day, every day, and recently Tim has been doing both instead of just one. I probably would have noticed something was wrong sooner since Tim has no experience with such animals but...

This is not the first time I've dealt with goat illnesses but the first where I missed the signs and intervened too late.

Mocha and Americano are looking the same or slightly better than this morning after a dose of probiotics, three bottle feedings of milk, offerings of fresh alfalfa, water, and baking soda. I am hopeful about them.

Thanks to a co-worker needing to trade shifts I got tomorrow off and instead work on Saturday; a huge blessing since time flew by and I didn't think to call my boss to request tomorrow off until after hours.

I'll definitely update you on the status of the kids tomorrow.

Pic #1: the healthy kids. Very difficult to get a picture of since they're constantly moving and coming up to me.
Wow! It's already canning and preserving time! So much about this season has jumped up on me like the local strawberries. It only occurred to me to check the picking availability the week after everything died back. Good thing one of the vendors at the Renton Farmer's Market today had beautiful strawberries from Skagit Valley! Blueberries and raspberries have already taken up residence in the chest freezer. Tomorrow I will be processing four half-flats of strawberries. Next week a vendor has agreed to bring an extra box of pickling cukes just for me and later in the season I'm planning to can blackberry jelly, green beans, peaches, and sauerkraut at the very minimum.

Growing good food is a lot of work and preserving that good food for the rest of the year is also a lot of work. But in our case I'd much rather be doing that than shuttling ourselves back and forth from a hospital for yet another bout with cancer (Shoshana is not the first in my immediate family to deal with cancer and the majority of the last two generations dealt with cancer or died of it). Not that diet is the only cause of such things but when your genetics are already working against you then the extra time and care will probably be worth it.

But back to yesterday. While doing other things mom spotted beautiful red beets at Carpinito Brothers in Kent so we bought twenty pounds and pickled them.

For those who are interested in the pickling process...

Ingredients

One of the more difficult things about picking and canning is you need to plan ahead so as to have all the equipment hot at the same time. In this case, the beets need to cook first then you just slip the skins off in a sink of cold water.

Next is slicing them into manageable pieces and packing them into jars; I prefer thin slices versus wedges.

Then you fill the jars with the hot prepared picking juice, get the air bubbles out, apply the lids, and process in your hot water bath for 30 min.

And, for good measure, half of a box of blueberries also from Carpinito Brothers. The other half was already in the freezer before it occurred to me to take a picture.

At this point they are only attached to the youngest buds at the end of the main branches. My plan at this early stage is to spray the effected leaves with diluted dish soap in a spray bottle on the sharpest spray. If I hold the leaf while spraying then about half the aphids are knocked off and the other half will have to deal with the surfactants in the soap water and should either suffocate or dehydrate. You should also spray off the soap residue from the plants as it may burn your plants. This is less of a concern with the tougher leaves of fruit trees but certainly an issue for more fragile plants like peas and beans. If the aphid problem is more widespread you may have to consider more aggressive treatment or they will spread everywhere and start sucking the energy from everything so early detection and treatment is key.
